Economic Reasons for American Independence Eleven years before America had declared it's independence there was 1,450,000 white and 400,000 Negro subjects of the crown. The colonies extended from the Atlantic to the Appalachian barrier. The life in these thirteen colonies was primarily rural, the economy based on agriculture, most were descended from the English, and politics were only the concern of land owners. Throughout these prosperous colonies, only a small portion of the population were content with their lives as subjects of George III. Most found it hard to be continually enthusiastic for their King sitting on his thrown, thousands of miles away. Despite this there were few signs of the upcoming revolution. The occasional call for democracy and liberty were written off by loyalists. Among the upper class feelings of loyalty to the crown were strong and eloquently expressed. The attitudes of the common people mirrored their counterparts in England. They had a combination of indifference and obeisance. To the present day American this is quite difficult to believe. However, all of this can be explained by Benjamin Franklin, "I never had heard in any Conversation from any Person drunk or sober, the least Expression of a wish for a Separation, or Hint that such a Thing would be advantageous to America." However all of this did not last for long. In the summer and fall of the same year, the colonists gave up their habits of submission and a new people emerged. The Stamp Act ignited the furies of the colonists. The people refused to pay, especially the colonial upper class. The match that had been lit was put out was put out by the repealing of this act. The match, however, did not go out. Many historians have pondered upon the events and forces that drove the American people to rebellion against their mother country. This was important but it still eluded the historians to find out what made this people ripe for rebellion, or, more exactly, what was there about the continental colonies in 1765 that made them so willing to engage in open defiance of a major imperial policy? One of the proposed answers, arguably the best known, was volunteered by one of the causes of the revolution, John Adams in 1818. "The Revolution was effected before the was commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people. . . . This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people, was the real American Revolution." Adams, in a sense, argued that even before the first shot of war, there had existed a collective outlook called the American mind, whose chief characteristics were self-reliance, patriotism, practicality, and the love of liberty, with liberty defined as freedom from alien dictation. It was the dictation of shortsighted ministers of an equally shortsighted king that pushed the American mind to assert itself boldly for the first time. Adams had not found it necessary to describe in detail the forces that had produced this mind. A reason for this had been the extraordinary student of political relations, Edmund Burke had already given a perceptive description. In his speech on conciliation with the colonies, Burke singles out "six capital sources" to account for the American "love of freedom," and strong sense of liberty. These capital sources were: their English descent; their popular forms of government; "religion in the northern provinces"; "manners in the southern"; education; and "the remoteness of the situation from the first mover of government." In his and Adam's praise was a recognition that this liberty rested on firm and fertile ground. All of this was rounded off by Alexis de Tocqueville. He revealed the unique nature of the American Republic: "The great advantage of the Americans is that they have arrived at a state of democracy without having to endure a democratic revolution" or to stare the thesis in terms of 1776, the Americans already enjoyed the liberty they were fighting for. The first ingredient of American Liberty was the peoples heritage from England. Burke had acknowledged this "capitol source". He explained that the colonists were the descendants of Englishmen, a people who respects their freedom. Definition and Examples of Estuary English Estuary English is a contemporary variety of British English: a mixture of non-regional and southeastern English pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, which is thought to have originated around the banks of the River Thames and its estuary. Also known as  Cockneyfied RP and Nonstandard Southern English. In some of its features (but not all), Estuary English is related to the traditional Cockney dialect and accent  spoken by people living in the East End of London. By the Waters of Babylon and Planet of the Apes Comparitive Essay      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The short story by the waters of Babylon and the movie planet of the apes were both futuristic stories.   They also both showed the evil sides of today’s man and the chaos and mass destruction that we are capable of accomplishing.   They portrayed today’s man as selfish, violent, and full of hate and rage.   By the waters of Babylon was written from the point of view of a boy close to becoming a man who knew nothing of his past civilization.   Whereas in the movie planet of the apes it was from the point of view of a man that had come nearly directly from that past civilization.   The main people in charge keep knowledge from the public so they do not know the evils that they are capable of as to protect them from making the same mistake.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In both stories our present civilization had destroyed the earth, as we now know it and had killed most of the humans.   The cause of these catastrophes in both stories was suspected to be from nuclear war.   These places were the nuclear bombs had supposably hit could not grow food and had no signs of life and were called the forbidden zones.   The main people in charge did not allow people to go into these so-called forbidden places.   In the story by the waters of Babylon the people in charge were called the high priests.   In the movie the planet of the apes the main people in charge were the elder apes and Dr. Zayus.   In both stories their reasons for having the forbidden zones were similar they wanted to hide the past from them so they do not do it again.   One last strange similarity is that they both took place in New York City or in that area.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In by the waters of Babylon the main character and narrator was a boy on the verge of manhood.   He was in a culture that resembled that of medieval times.   Their culture had many tales, stories, good spirits, evil spirits, and magic.   He was the son of a high priest, he called himself John.   High priests made up the rules, purified evil objects and knew everything about everything.     As the high priest’s son he himself wanted to become a good priest but to become one he had to look at the place of gods with his own eyes.

The supply problems of major cities require integrated approaches that combine demand management, leak repair, backflow prevention, wastewater reuse, and the efficient, sustainable exploitation of sources. Solid Waste Disposal. The interdependence of sanitation aspects is illustrated by the need for adequate solid waste removal to prevent the blockage of rainwater drains. Collection of refuse in hot climates must be frequent since piles attract flies and rats, and it should rely more on local labor-intensive methods rather than on expensive trucks. For the operation to be successful requires close cooperation between the users and providers of the service, and financing must come either from municipal recurrent funds and/or user fees. Excreta Disposal. Large sewerage infrastructure projects tend to be too expensive for the vast majority of urban and rural people in developing countries, and it may be impossible to build a sewage network infrastructure in congested, narrow streets. On-site options include latrines, pourflush toilets, and septic tanks. There should be evaluated at each location according to needs and priorities. As water use grows in villages and towns, wastewater from washing and bathing (sullage) can be cost-effectively handled by a separate drainage system coupled to on-site excreta disposal. Garbage is a never ending cycle. Every day each household produces a significant amount of trash. The more we consume the more garbage we incur. Garbage disposal has been a monumental problem ever since. ( Yapchiongco, 2012) For a lack of historic time series of reliable nationally representative drinking water quality data, the JMP cannot report on the actual water safety aspect of the MDG drinking water target. The proxy indicator used in the global survey methodology – â€Å"use of improved drinking water sources† – does not guarantee that the quality of drinking water consumed by people meets the standards for safe drinking water as proposed in the WHO Guidelines for Drinking water Quality (WHO, 2011). Pollution from domestic and industrial sources, geogenic contamination, and poor sanitation and hygiene all threaten the safety of drinking water sources. In recognition of these threats, many drinking water supply operators and regulators are adopting an integrated risk assessment and management approach that takes risk spots and events into account along the chain of events from source to tap. Strategies include quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA), sanitary inspections, the application of health-based targets and water safety plans (WSPs). The practice of household water treatment and safe storage (HWTS) can help improve water quality at the point of consumption, especially when drinking water sources are distant, unreliable or unsafe. However, HWTS is a stopgap measure only and does not replace the obligation of a service provider to provide access to safe drinking water. It is intended for people who have no access to improved drinking water sources at all, for people with access to improved sources outside of their home or premises (i.e. when contamination can occur during transport and storage), for people with unreliable piped supplies who have to store water to bridge the gaps between deliveries, and for people in emergency situations. People relying on unimproved drinking water sources who apply an appropriate household water treatment method are still not considered to have sustainable access to safe drinking water. The movie, released in October 2018, is based on a real-life father-son pair, David and Nic Sheff, bringing to life the memoirs each wrote about their experiences and struggles. David’s memoir is named Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction and is a depiction of parental love and the grief of a father’s trying to understand his son’s spiraling addiction. The movie also draws on Nic’s memoir, Tweak, which tells his personal perspective of addiction. 2. Boy Erased (2018) Based On: Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and Family  by Garrad Conley Based on a true story, this movie about a boy’s coming out in a conservative Arkansas town is an adaptation of Garrard Conley’s Boy Erased: A Memoir. Like Jared in the film, Garrard Conley was raised in a fundamentalist family and pressured into conversion therapy after coming out as gay while in college. He wrote his memoir to bring to light the harmful nature of conversion therapy and the inhumane practices involved. 3. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018) Based On: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows This film is an adaptation of the charming historical novel of the same name that librarian Mary Ann Shaffer and her niece Annie Barrows wrote in 2008. The film is very true to the original novel’s plotline, following protagonist Juliet Ashton’s journey as a young writer during World War II. She decides to travel to Guernsey Island after receiving a letter about a secret literary society that was established there during the German occupation. A major aspect of the novel that could not be replicated on screen is that it is told in an epistolary fashion through Juliet’s beautifully written letters. 4. The Hate U Give (2018) Based On: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas This timely movie is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Angie Thomas. Thomas created the character of Starr, a sixteen-year-old black girl who is struggling to balance two very different lives. Starr has grown up in a low-income, predominantly black neighborhood, but she attends a mostly white college-prep school. When her unarmed friend is shot by police in her neighborhood, she is called to activism as the only witness to the crime. 5. The Haunting of Hill House (2018) Based On: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson This new television web series has brought Shirley Jackson’s gothic horror novel The Haunting of Hill House to life in a terrifying way. Many may not realize that the frightening Hill House and its unfortunate guests were originally created by Jackson in 1959. Although some of the original character’s names- such as Eleanor, Theodora, and Luke- are used in the television show, they are considerably different characters than the ones from the book. Instead of featuring siblings who grew up in Hill House, the original plotline of Jackson’s novel is about four strangers who come to the famously haunted Hill House to help scientist Dr. Montague find evidence of supernatural forces.
